Sufi Soul is the work of three young women: Zamzam Syed, an attorney, Dania Khan, an architect and Anam Syed, a writer. As children, the three grew up experiencing the depth and beauty of the Eastern aesthetic. While they all later left the city of their birth, Karachi for the United States and the UAE, they maintained ties to their subcontinental roots in spirit. The Sufi Soul line was born out of a shared love of Sufi poetry and the Eastern literary tradition. Initially, Islam was brought to South Asia through the poetry and Mysticism of peaceful Sufi saints. The tradition of Sufi poetry and song is a strong reminder of a not-too-distant past where artistic expression and philosophical modernity were ideals to uphold. The designs and the collection at large are the brainchild of Dania Khan, who wove her architectural eye with a keen focus on Eastern arts, especially calligraphy. Vast research led to inspiring designs that resulted in a collection of calligraphy scripts, free-flying birds, and whirling Dervishes representing the spirit of this Mystic movement. Zamzam Syed, while an attorney, has always possessed an immense love and admiration for more creative pursuits, especially those that explore her Eastern heritage. She functions as one of the main creative forces behind the line, helping to shape its uniform vision. Anam Syed, an avid photographer, is responsible for the artistic impression of the Sufi Soul's photo projects and the line's audio/visual presence. Through this line, they’ve come together and combined their individual aesthetics to bring forth this Mystic vision. |
